  • According to the ILO Convention No. 169, "indigenous and tribal peoples" stands for "(a) tribal peoples in independent countries whose social, cultural and economic conditions distinguish them from other sections of the national community, and whose status is regulated wholly or partially by their own customs or traditions or by special laws; (b) peoples in independent countries who are regarded as indigenous on account of their descent from the populations which inhabited the country, or a geographical region to which the country belongs, at the time of conquest or colonisation or the establishment of present state boundaries and who, irrespective of their legal status, retain some or all of their own social, economic, cultural and political institutions. Self-identification as indigenous or tribal shall be regarded as a fundamental criterion for determining the groups to which the provisions of this Convention apply." The term can be accompanied by the name of a specific people, i.e. Yanomani Indigenous peoples. The term "aboriginal peoples" is used in the context of Australia, Canada and the United States

  • The Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the accompanying Protocol define the term "refugee" to apply to any person who "..owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it." (CSR - 1, PSR - 1)
  • Aux fins de la Convention relative au statut des réfugiés et son protocole, le terme «réfugié» s'applique à toute personne qui «. craignant avec raison d'être persécutée du fait de sa race, de sa religion, de sa nationalité, de son appartenance à un certain groupe social ou de ses opinions publiques, se trouve hors du pays dont elle a la nationalité et qui ne peut ou, du fait de cette crainte, ne veut se réclamer de la protection de ce pays ; ou qui, si elle n'a pas de nationalité et se trouve hors du pays dans lequel elle avait sa résidence habituelle ., ne peut ou, en raison de ladite crainte, ne veut y retourner.» (CSR - 1, PSR - 1).
