This file consists of an oral history interview with Rich (Richard) North, and associated documents. The interview was conducted by Elise Chenier, with videographer Jessica Sigurdson, on November 14, 2010.
Mr. North speaks about:
• His family and growing up in Winnipeg.
• Gay crushes as a boy, coming out in 1972 and what was in the media about gay people during that time.
• Meeting Chris (Christopher) Vogel and their long-term relationship.
• Their marriage ceremony, the issues around it and the media coverage which included an interview on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)’s “As It Happens” with Barbara Frum.
• His work in the 1970s with Gays for Equality, Manitoba’s first gay liberation organization, and their setting up of the Oscar Wilde Memorial Society, which later became Giovanni’s Room and then Gio’s.
